SmartCite is Performing Slowly

While using SmartCite to insert citations into your Word document, you may notice that SmartCite starts to lag - especially if you're working on a document 50+ pages or longer, or, with a large amount of citations.

Not to worry - this is due to the add-in checking all of the citations within the document and syncing the data with your library, which can be time consuming.

To help you cite more smoothly, with your document open, head into the Options within SmartCite and select the option for “Turn off automatic bibliography updates”. This will allow you to cite your sources without SmartCite needing to sync to your library to gather all of the metadata for your citations.

Don’t worry about the bibliography.

When you are finished with the document you can go into the Bibliography tab within SmartCite and Update Bibliography.

From there the add-in will check all of the citations in place and then update your bibliography, which will take a few minutes depending on the amount of citations that you have associated within the document.
